Kathryn Parsons
Kathryn is an artist and maker exploring little-known true stories of places: their biodiversity, histories and people.
In 2018, Kathryn worked with Firebat’s Gayle Price on ‘Symbiosis’ - a collection of small, intricate sculptures created as part of the University of Leicester’s Brief Encounters project, for British Science Week.
Made from porcelain, glass and antique thread, the sculptures were inspired by Gayle’s work in glass, while also telling of three micro-fungi studied at the University; penicillium, mycorrhizal fungi, and especially the yeasts that are used in genetics research.
Firebat, on working with Kathryn:
“We usually work to very exacting parameters. It was different to be asked to just explore, to not create something regular, and good to be reminded how beautiful and versatile glass can be.”
