McFarland & Singer

Gillian McFarland & Ruth Singer are an established artist collaboration focused on research-led practice and partnerships.

During 2017 they were  Artists in Residence in the Genetics Department of Leicester University, exploring creative and visual responses to DNA research. The project, ‘Process’ was featured on BBC Inside Science on 11th May 2017.
They worked with Firebat’s Gayle Price, to create new work based on their research, generating material for exhibition in Leicester and then on to further exhibitions in Berlin and Bath.

“Contributing to this project was a wonderful way of exploring the links between scientific knowledge and artistic expression. The glassware I usually produce for use in the laboratories tends to be of uniform size and appearance, so it’s been very liberating to deliberately include ‘flaws’ as part of the finished pieces. Seeing regular scientific glassware subtly altered in so many different ways is a fantastically fun and effective way of demonstrating the small deviations in our own genetic coding over time.”
